Our intention is to improve oral health care globally by development and improvement of clinical therapies in the field of implant and regenerative dentistry. With national and international partners, we want to improve and facilitate global clinical research by providing high quality service structures which include qualified staff and cutting-edge infrastructure to multiple stakeholders like scientists, clinicians, university and industrial partners and regulatory bodies.

The accomplishment of the center encompasses all scientific steps of the value chain in the development of new therapeutic strategies. Beginning with drafting of the idea until the performance of a clinical trial Swiss quality standards represent our basis of documentation and communication. The center is financially supported by donations, grants and industrial partners.


Millions of individuals all over the world suffer from missing teeth. Depending on the patient's need dental implants are used as artificial roots replacing missing teeth and therefore, giving back the possibility to chew, to have anormal bit function and to have a nice smile.

The center of implant research (CIR) at the University of Zurich (UZH) is a platform for research and developments in dental implantology. This encompasses tissue regeneration and offers cutting-edge facilities and professional staff to improve new developments in implantology and to enlarge the indications for patients care worldwide.

Need for further developments

There is a continuous need for improvements in dental implantology representing the fastest growing discipline in dentistry. Developments in this field have a significant impact because more than 16 million implants are placed every year. This number significantly increases year after year. In order to improve worldwide patient care there is a constant demand for further developments in dental implantology and tissue regeneration. In addition, the regulatory bodies in health care significantly increased the stringency for clinical studies. This leads to an amplified demand for high-quality clinical studies and is asking for specialized centers working in strong global research networks.

Novel service structure

Ihe CIR is a platform for research and developments in dental implantology. It is equipped to meet the modern regulatory demands and is structurally organized to increase the quality and effectiveness in clinical research needed in this rapidly growing field. It offers a service structure including facilities and professional staff managing a global network of clinical research activities. Through our partner universities and private practices the overall power of clinical studies and the efficiency can be significantly improved. All this taken together ensures, that the time for new developments and for patents can be considerably reduced. Therefore the costs for new products will decrease. This will lead to rapid and tangible benefits for patients in all parts of the world. 

The CIR additionally serves as an international center provding exchange programs for dentists and researchers from partner universities all over the world to stay and work at the CIR.

Partner centers

The CIR wants to ensure short times for patient admission combined with high quality standards. Therefore, we cooperate with different centers worldwide. Depending on the objective of the planned study, we select the most suitable centers with the appropriate patient pool.
